Do you know that for the past 30 years, the rate of global warming has accelerated? The environment is important to us, it determines our survival. Our class has thus taken action as a response to Earth Hour, create awareness about the issue of climate change and inspire people to alleviate some of Earth's sufferings.
Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund), asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

Why is the environment degrading
Degrading of the environment is mainly caused by the phenomenon known as global warming, which is increase in average temperature of the earth. Almost 100% of the observed temperature increase over the last 50 years has been due to the increase in the atmosphere of greenhouse gas concentrations like water vapour, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and ozone. Greenhouse gases are those gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by acting like a mirror and reflect back to the Earth some of the heat energy which would otherwise be lost to space. The largest contributing source of greenhouse gas is the burning of fossil fuels leading to the emission of carbon dioxide.

What action has the world taken
The world has taken various measures to counter global warming. UN countries have met up in Copenhagen in 2009 to discuss a framework to reduce global warming. The EU and USA have also introduced emission trading in an effort to encourage factories to cut down on pollution. Many countries in the world have also signed the Kyoto Protocol, a treaty where the participating countries have to lower their greenhouse gases emission in a cap and trade scheme. There have also been many NGOs like Greenpeace spreading the message to stop global warming. The world has taken action, what about you?
1. Switch off lights after use
2. Use the fan
3. Don't buy goods that contain CFCs
4. Save paper
5. Consume less meat

7. Buy energy saving lamps
8. Fix all water leaks
9. Use the Sun to dry your clothes
10. Walk/ride a bike/public transport
11. Brushing teeth - turn off the tap
12. Use compact fluorescent bulbs
13. Use microwave instead of oven

18. Avoid using plastic bags
19. PLANT A TREE!
We all know that the Earth is slowly warming up, and that the consequences can be dire. In fact, you may have already felt or noticed the warning signs. From the increase in natural disasters all around the world, especially with regards to sever drought or excessive snowfall to the general increase in daily temperature, even in Singapore. I’m sure you must have felt the EXTREME HEATWAVES radiating into your classrooms or at the school track when you having your PE. So before this situation gets any worse, let us do something to decelerate this impending crisis. YOU, yes YOU, just like everyone else, have a part to play in this important global cause. You can start by spreading this awareness to your friends and make a effort to conserve energy in your daily life. Remember, it’s the small step that everyone takes that will eventually accumulate to something significant.
